Update: Santa Barbara

Morning! It's Friday morning here in Oakland, CA, just outside San Francisco. I'm staying here for a few nights and have now managed to update the blog as far as Reno en route to San Francisco. Sorry I haven't been able to do more, but time is limited. I'm now going to head south with JZ to Santa Barbara. We're going by car and visiting another long time friend, so not much action will be happening here for a few days. I'll try and update again when I get to Seattle on Monday, or when I get to Edmonton on Wednesday. Thanks for coming back in such large numbers - the hit counter is spinning round and inspires me to keep on blogging :-)

Happy travelling,

*j*

thanks for your very interesting travelogue. It makes me want to hop on a cross-country train myself. Even though my last Amtrak trip (Chicago-St. Paul) was 3 hours behind schedule.

James,
I stumbled onto your trip report and am enjoying it alot! The part that came up is about your trip on the Coast Starlight. What a hoot. I was on that same train on Wednesday night, April 27, and we ran even later than you. I got to Tacoma at 1:00 AM, and went straight to my motel (flew out of SeaTac the next morning). I can't believe you didn't mention Mt Shasta. Hopefully it was "out" when you went by. Well anyway, I'll continue reading your excellent travelog when I get time and maybe have a few more comments (since I too have been all over using the North America Rail Pass ... even to Churchill).
